Он используется для оценки ожидаемой волатильности индекса S&P 500, включающего показатели 500 крупнейших компаний, торгующихся в США. Высокая волатильность актуальна для краткосрочных инвестиций, например, в трейдинге. В небольшом временном диапазоне изменение цены отражается сильнее всего. Там активные трейдеры нередко договариваются о совместной покупке или продаже активов. Волатильность растет, когда происходят важные политические, экономические или рыночные события. Например, когда Иран пригрозил перекрыть Ормузский пролив, волатильность цен нефтяных фьючерсов повысилась. Ведь пятая часть всех мировых поставок нефти проходит по этому пути. А самыми рисковыми активами считаются криптовалюты и деривативы — фьючерсы и опционы. Волатильность бывает высокой и низкой и на нее влияет множество как внутренних, так и внешних факторов. Например, у Илона Маска в твиттере более 49 миллионов подписчиков, поэтому его твиты влияют на рыночные цены. Торговля по фундаментальному анализу построена на данных, полученных из новостей. Ожидаемая историческая волатильность — это прогнозы ожидаемой волатильности, сделанные в прошлых периодах. Точные значения, по достижении которых волатильность считается низкой или высокой, могут быть разными у каждого актива. Например, если цена актива изменяется в пределах 3–5% с момента покупки, то для фиксации прибыли требуется достичь цены, выше покупочной на 5%. Для долгосрочных инвесторов волатильность — это просто рыночный шум. Если инвестор проверяет свой портфель реже, чем раз в квартал, он вообще может не заметить всплесков волатильности. Но начинающим инвесторам стоит быть аккуратными при высоком индексе волатильности — тщательно обдумывать покупки и набирать позиции постепенно. У новичков часто не хватает опыта и понимания своей устойчивости к риску, поэтому они продают активы на минимуме и покупают на максимуме. Индикатор волатильности ATR (average true range) измеряет разницу между high и low, а затем сглаживает результат. Поэтому ATR универсален и может измерять волатильность валютных пар (например, волатильность рубля к доллару), акций, криптовалют и любых других активов на любых периодах. Оба вида волатильности (HV и IV) выражаются как в виде процентов, так и в виде стандартных отклонений (плюс или в минус). Если вы говорите, что стандартное отклонение акций XYZ составляет 10%, это означает, что они могут либо получить, либо потерять 10% от своей общей стоимости.
